Final Fantasy 15's Backstory - What You Need To Know

One of the great things about Final Fantasy is how the story changes between each mainline entry in the series. We are always introduced to a new cast of characters, and it always takes us to an exciting new world. That means you do not need to magically know everything that has happened in the series over the last three decades. Phew.

While this is still true of Final Fantasy 15, there are some things you can do to better understand its story when you finally play. You can still get the gist of the story if you just play the game, but there are a lot of things that are only hinted at. There is a lot of telling instead of showing, and some of the finer details are not covered at all. Luckily, those events are portrayed elsewhere, in movies and anime shorts.

So, if you want to understand everything, here are the things you need to watch before you wade in to Final Fantasy 15 on PC:

Brotherhood: Final Fantasy XV

Brotherhood is a series of five anime shorts that act as a prequel to the events of the game. As well as setting up the story, this acts as a perfect introduction to the main cast, allowing you to really understand the complex relationships of the four friends you take control of: Gladiolus, Prompto, Ignis, and Noctis.

Final Fantasy 15 is essentially a long road trip where these four friends bond and grow together. The game itself never shows how the four came so close in the first place, however. Luckily, that is exactly what this series of anime films is for.

In Brotherhood, you will learn how Ignis became such a great chef, how Prompto and Noctis became so close, and more. All of this juicy information is packaged up in an anime series that is peppered with drama and comedy, making it a must-watch for anyone who is looking to get into Final Fantasy 15. Best of all, every episode is free to watch on YouTube.

Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV

If you have seen Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children or Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, this is essentially Final Fantasy 15’s take on that style of movie. It is an action-packed CGI movie with incredible special effects and high production values.

The events of the movie happen concurrently with the game, so you get a glimpse into what is happening off-screen as you make your way through the game’s open world. Kingsglaive follows the story of King Regis, main character Noctis’ father, as events unfold in the kingdom of Insomnia.

During the game, something huge goes down as you embark on your road trip, kicking off an intercontinental war. The game does not show you exactly what happens, but Kingsglaive handily fills in the gaps, giving you a better idea of the big picture surrounding your in-game adventures. Better still, it features the voice acting talent of brilliant actors such as Lena Headey and Sean Bean. It is available to watch on Netflix and other streaming services, or you can buy a physical copy from a retailer.
